but i saved them anyway

i carried them in my arms 

back to the water

back to safety

back to ancestry

they didn't need to be carried

but i scooped them up anyway

it made me appear a hero

though i wear no cape

though i am not brave

though i seek no praise

they didn't know who i was

but they let me carry them anyway

it was something about my face

a faded memory

a lost friend

a bond to amend

they didn't need me at all

but the drive to be still pounds anyway

hardwired to rescue i suppose

all pieces of a pattern

all pawns in a game

all lost to the pain
